What is Oral Pathology?
Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology is a unique and challenging specialty of dentistry. It is the study of diseases of the oral and maxillofacial structures including soft tissues, bone and teeth. On the other hand, general (medical) pathology, “is a bridging discipline involving both, basic science and clinical practice and is devoted to the study of the structural and functional changes in cells, tissues, and organs that underlie disease”. (Textbook of Basic Pathology by Robbins and Cotran).
The two and three year residency programs of Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology include in-depth study of histopathology, oral medicine, and oral radiology. Without exception, this training is not offered in general pathology residency programs, where the exposure to this specialty is limited to short rotations.
Dr. Robison’s training and experience in these two important specialties closes the gap between dentistry and medicine. She is committed to utilizing her knowledge for the benefit of the patients and her fellow colleagues.
